Carpets

Like everything else a household or business purchases, carpets are a valuable investment. The average life of any carpet can be increased by simply initiating a sound maintenance program as soon as the carpet is installed.

The most important benefit of this program is the money saved by not having to replace carpets prematurely. As well the carpet will look great.

Since soil is only visible on the top 1/3 of carpet, waiting to clean carpet until it is visibly dirty, is too long. Because dirt and grit are so abrasive, waiting until the last minute to clean, will shorten the carpets life and detract from a home or business appearance.

The correct maintenance program for any carpet must be tailored to the exact requirements of each home or business.

A proper program blends a variety of methods to obtain the best result.

Hot Water Extraction

Hot Water Extraction and steam cleaning are the same process. It is water sprayed into the carpet under pressure and is extracted seconds later. This process can be performed by portable machines or truck mounted equipment. Soiled areas may need to be Pre-Scrubbed before extraction to loosen debris.

Purclean Dry Extraction Process

This system is designed to remove dirt, grime and atmospheric soiling in carpet. An emulsifier is released on the carpet to loosen dirt and spots. Next, a special absorbent pad immersed in a neutralizing solution gently massages all sides of the carpet fibre to remove grime and soiling.

Carpet Care Tips

Carpet manufacturers say the three best things for your carpet are vacuum, spot clean, and vacuum. Regular vacuuming not only removes considerable dry soiling and grit, but it also lifts and restores the pile. 86% of soiling in carpet is dry and can be removed effectively by proper powerful vacuuming and pile lifting. The type of vacuum used is most important. The best vacuum is a dual motor upright, one motor for the brush and another motor for the vacuum. A brush without a beater bar is best for direct/glue down, and a brush with a beater bar is best for carpet installed over pad. Top loading paper filter bags are highly recommended. Vacuums should be checked and serviced regularly to ensure proper performance. Canister type vacuums without power driven brush heads are suitable for trash pick up and vacuuming of non trafficked areas . They are ineffective for pile agitation. Heavily used areas where immediately off the street traffic occurs should be vacuumed daily to stop the migration of dirt. Medium trafficked areas vacuumed every other day and light trafficked areas usually once a week. Each area should have between 3 to 5 passes for effective pile agitation, vacuuming and soil removal. It is also imperative that the brush go against the lay of the pile so it stands up when vacuumed. This means the operator should always vacuum in one direction as the other way would lay the carpet fibres down, trapping in the soil.

Draperies & Blinds

Window coverings in your home or office act like a filter for dust, dirt and all other types of airborne particulate. If they are not professionally cleaned, fabric fibres deteriorate beyond repair.

One of our professionally trained installers will come to your home or office, to examine your window coverings, in the critical areas of sun damage, oxidation, shrinkage and colour loss. After examination, we will give you a free, no obligation, estimate. If you approve, your window coverings are taken down and brought to our plant.

In our plant, your window coverings are examined once again, as to fibre content, fabric condition and types of soils and dyes.

After carefully measuring your window coverings we then process them for cleaning either by washing, dry cleaning or by the ultrasonic process.

During cleaning, your draperies go through a sizing process to restore the body and texture of the fabric. As drapery specialists, we are equipped to add the precise amount of sizing to get the proper body and texture.

After pressing, parallel pleating and installing new pinhooks where necessary our professional installer returns to your home or office and rehangs your window coverings.

Additional Services include: Repairs and Fire Retardant treatments.

Window Coverings Alert: Sun Damage to Draperies

Most textiles, especially draperies, are exposed to sunlight and the atmosphere at some point during their use. Different elements in the environment, like sunlight, microorganisms, industrial fumes, and fungus, can attack textiles, causing chemical degradation and weakening.

The action of sunlight is topochemical; degradation takes place at the fibre surface. This degradation shows up as a loss in fabric strength.

Draperies hang at windows giving no indication that they have undergone this type of attack. It is not until the draperies are put through a cleaning process with mechanical action that the already weakened yarns tear. The cleaning did not cause the tear; it only provided a means for the weakening to become visible.

Window glass filters out shorter wavelengths of the sun’s ultraviolet light which are so damaging. Less exposure to the shorter wavelengths causes less damage to the fabrics behind the glass than fabric being placed outdoors, unprotected.

Upholstery

In today’s household or business, furniture represents a major investment. Furniture adds function and most importantly beauty and appearance in every room and office. With any good investment, you expect long lasting value. Today’s furniture market has introduced a wide variety of fibres, fabrics, colours and styles.

Before attempting to clean upholstered furniture, identify the fabric and the correct cleaning method recommended by the manufacturer of the furniture. If this information is not on the upholstery itself, it should be accessible through the retailer where it was purchased.

Upholstery Care Tips

Fabric Care:

  • Rearrange cushions occasionally to ensure even use and reduce wear patterns.
  • Loose cushions should be reversed weekly.
  • Vacuum often to remove grit that may cause abrasion.
  • Ultraviolet light (sunlight) will cause fibre degeneration and colour fade. Fabrics must be protected from the sun. Occasionally dyes can fade from impurities within the air.
  • Keep pets off furniture. Pet urine and pet body oil can be difficult to remove.
  • Structural weave fabrics (Design created by the weave), can snag if not properly cared for. Another reason to keep pets off.

No home or business should be without this versatile, water based, all purpose spot remover.

Entrance Matting

The most cost effective method of keeping home or business maintenance costs at a minimum is to stop dirt at the door. Dirt, dust, grime and debris is a year round problem. Proper Entrance Matting is a year round solution.

Consider if you will the following statistics:

  • 70 -80 % of dirt and moisture enters a building through the front, back and side entrances.
  • Over a 20 day period, 1000 people will deposit 24 pounds of dirt.
  • The cost of removing one pound of dirt exceeds $ 500 on average.
  • Within the first 6 feet, 42 % of the floors finish will be removed after only 1500 people have entered.

Entrance Matting is the first line of defense. A proper matting system consisting of a minimum of 15 feet will trap, hold and hide 85 % of dirt at the entrance. Proper matting truly enhances the appearance level of any home or office.

In addition to reducing maintenance costs a proper matting system will reduce the levels of airborne particulate thus improving the overall indoor air quality of your home or office. As well, the spread of organic matter present in dirt and debris is also reduced thus decreasing odours in your home or office. Lastly, proper matting reduces slips and falls increasing occupant safety.

We offer sensible solutions to the expensive rental matting program’s. Our solutions include both matting supply and annual care programs suited to your budget and foot traffic requirements. We would be pleased to review and consult with you on your matting requirements.

Basic facts on rental versus purchasing of mats:
Rental mats

  • Provide a limited range of widths, lengths & colors.
  • Dye lots maybe inconsistent and not match throughout the facility.
  • Wiper only mats are supplied.
  • Maintenance staff often end up vacuuming the mats on a daily basis
  • In the summer months less matting is required. Does your contract adapt to summer requirements?

Purchase of mats:

  • Mat purchasing is more cost effective. In most cases, you can purchase a mat for the same cost as renting the same mat for 4 – 5 months.
  • Mat purchasing provides more variety in soil protection. A proper matting system incorporates the usage of scraper, wiper/scraper and wiper only matting.
  • Mat purchasing provides a wider selection of colors, widths & lengths.
