Entrance mats are beneficial to any building and property for so many reasons. One of the main benefits of using entrance matting is to ensure the safety of people walking into the building. They are also great for improving hygiene and reducing house keeping costs by trapping and holding dirt, debris etc. from migrating into the common areas of any building.

But what are some of the qualities that make for an effective entrance mat?

The backing material

Entrance mats are manufactured with a variety of backing materials.  While vinyl and rubber may be the most commonly used, they perform quite differently. If you are planning to invest in entrance matting, make sure you know what backing material you are choosing. Vinyl is less expensive than rubber and lacks the attributes that make mats durable. Vinyl mats have comparatively lower durability and versatility because they are susceptible to curling, warping, and cracking. They may be more suitable for light or lower traffic areas. Rubber mats are more versatile and stronger, perfect for high-traffic areas. They will endure drastic temperatures and general wear and tear. They are also less prone to cracking and curling.

Backing thickness

The backing thickness determines mat durability and shape. Thicker and heavier backings offer more dimensional stability which translates to a materials ability to maintain its original dimensions when subjected to changes in temperature and humidity. If you are concerned about the winter season having an impact on your entrance matting, opt for a thicker and heavier backing to ensure minimal change to dimension. Backing thickness will also ensue the longevity of your matting saving you money on premature replacement costs.

Backing surface

The backing surface and flooring types go hand in hand. Matting that will be placed on any type of hard surface flooring i.e. marble, tile, wood etc. should have a smooth surface backing. This will allow both surfaces to achieve the most contact resulting in the most friction, preventing the mat from moving.

Matting that will be placed on a carpeted surface perform best with a full cleated backing. Cleats are small nubs that grip the carpeted surface to minimize movement.

In areas with heavier foot traffic and or cart and buggy traffic, alternative backing surfaces such as Suction or Anchor Safe should be considered. These backings will ensure the matting remains in place despite extreme traffic and conditions.

Before investing in entrance matting, a number of key components should be considered and reviewed to ensure the proper matting is selected for your type of facility.
